Halloween Movies 🎬 for Every Kind of Spooky Mood
From Gothic romance & witchy nostalgia to bloodthirsty vampires & movies that have absolutely no business being this disturbing. You’re welcome!
Written October 20, 2026
Updated Octber 28, 2026Some people decorate for Halloween.
I apparently build my entire personality around it. 🎃
Give me Gothic mansions, Victorian costumes, morally questionable vampires, witchy women & the occasional horror movie that makes me regret having eyeballs.
I’m not particularly picky about the genre. One night I’m watching Practical Magic with a cozy blanket. The next? 30 Days of Night because apparently peace was never an option.
So consider this my personal Halloween movie watchlist. Not ranked. Not definitive. Just a collection of spooky, campy, nostalgic & occasionally unhinged movies I keep coming back to.
My Top Picks
🩸 Bram Stoker’s Dracula
🪲 Beetlejuice
🎈 IT (All Adaptations)
🎈 IT: Welcome to Derry
💋 The Rocky Horror Picture Show
🎃 Trick or Treat
🍹Practical Magic
🐎 Sleepy Hollow
🌊 Widow’s Bay TV Series
💄Jennifer’s Body
🎃 Halloweentown
💍 Corpse Bride
🕯️ Gothic, Victorian & Dramatically Undead
For the romantics who prefer their love stories with corsets, candlelight & a questionable body count…
If there’s a crumbling mansion, elaborate costume design & somebody dramatically staring out a window, I’m already seated.
🩸 Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Gary Oldman in approximately 47 dramatic outfits, a centuries-long situationship & enough Gothic romance to ruin your standards forever, everrr.
🪞 Crimson Peak (2015)
A haunted mansion, spectacular Victorian gowns & a romance that comes with approximately 900 red flags. But the architecture?!
🐎 Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Tim Burton said give me fog, murder, a headless horseman & Johnny Depp looking perpetually concerned. Say less.
🦇 Nosferatu (1922 / 2024)
One of your most interesting opportunities for a little film-history nerdiness. The 1922 silent classic & Robert Eggers’ interpretation offer two very different viewing experiences. Highly recommend.
🎭 The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
A chandelier, a cape & a man who desperately needs therapy instead of a romantic subplot. The DRAMA.
🏹 Van Helsing (2004)
Gothic monster chaos, dramatic leather outfits & Hugh Jackman fighting practically every creature in the horror catalog.
🥧 Sweeney Todd (2007)
Victorian London, revenge, questionable meat pies & musical numbers. Tim Burton understood the assignment.
📖 The Brothers Grimm (2005)
Dark German fairy tales, creepy forests & two brothers discovering that their supernatural nonsense might actually be real.
🍬 Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
Childhood trauma turned into a monster-hunting career. Honestly, a reasonable response.
Cozy Halloween Classics & Nostalgia
Nostalgia, blankets, pumpkin candles & movies you’ve watched 47 times.
🎃 Halloweentown (1998)
Disney Channel raised an entire generation of spooky little weirdos, and I am forever grateful. An October requirement.
🧹 Hocus Pocus (1993)
Three chaotic witches, one talking cat & a town that apparently learned nothing about child supervision. An annual requirement. I don’t make the rules.
🐭 The Witches (1990)
A children’s movie that casually introduced an entire generation to body horror. Grand High Witch, you still haunt me.
🧛 The Little Vampire (2000)
A tiny vampire friendship with peak early-2000s Halloween energy.
🏚️ The Haunted Mansion (2003 / 2023)
Haunted real estate, Disney-style ghostly chaos & excellent spooky-season atmosphere.
🐸 Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
The Muppets investigating a haunted mansion? Absolutely no notes.
🧙 Witches & Magic
The classics for when you want magic, sisterhood & absolutely zero responsibility.
🍹 Practical Magic (1998)
Midnight margaritas, generational curses & a Victorian house I’d sell my soul to live in. The Owens women have my whole heart.
🎃 Halloweentown (1998)
🧹 Hocus Pocus (1993)
🐭 The Witches (1990)
🍒 The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Three women discover their power & accidentally invite the world’s most exhausting man into their lives. Relatable, unfortunately.
🦇 Vampires, Leather & Immortal Bad Decisions
For people who believe supernatural creatures should have excellent wardrobes.
🖤 Underworld (2003)
Vampires. Werewolves. Political drama. Kate Beckinsale in a leather catsuit. The costumes are giving aggressively expensive vampire nightclub. Posh AF & I LOVE IT. No notes.
🦇 The Lost Boys (1987)
Eighties vampires, questionable hairstyles & a seaside town with a serious nightlife problem. Iconic.
🌑 30 Days of Night (2007)
An entire month without sunlight in Alaska? The vampires really said location, location, location. Absolutely horrifying.
👑 Queen of the Damned (2002)
Aaliyah as Akasha, Gothic rock-star energy & a soundtrack that understood the assignment.
🔪 For the Horror Goblins: Enter at Your Own Risk
Slashers, psychological horror & genuinely unsettling films. Lights off + popcorn + someone willing to investigate that suspicious noise.
🎈 IT (1990 / 2017 / 2019)
A shapeshifting clown, childhood trauma & a small town with a VERY concerning missing-children problem. From Tim Curry’s iconic Pennywise to Bill Skarsgård’s nightmare fuel, both interpretations have permanent residency in my spooky little heart.
🤡 IT (2017) + IT Chapter Two (2019)
Bill Skarsgård took Pennywise in an entirely different direction, & somehow the Losers’ Club still thought returning to Derry was a reasonable idea. Two films, one extremely cursed town & enough nightmare fuel to last a lifetime.
🪓 The Shining (1980)
A remote hotel, an increasingly unwell husband & interior design choices that somehow make everything worse.
🛏️ Doctor Sleep (2019)
The sequel that had no business being this emotionally devastating. Childhood trauma really said, “Remember me?” Come play with us.
🚪 Barbarian (2022)
A rental property with a basement? In THIS economy? Absolutely not. Go in knowing as little as possible.
🕯️ House of Wax (2005)
A road trip, a wax museum & approximately 17 opportunities to leave. Nobody takes them.
🪆 Child’s Play (1988)
A possessed doll with anger issues. This is why I don’t trust toys with realistic faces.
🕒 Weapons (2025)
A whole town’s worth of unsettling questions & absolutely no desire to experience any of it firsthand.
💘 Obsession (2025)
My newest pick. Be careful what you wish for.
🧟 28 Days Later (2002)
Fast-moving infected people & the complete collapse of society. Suddenly staying home sounds fantastic.
🚗 Jeepers Creepers (2001)
A terrifying road trip reminder to mind your business and KEEP DRIVING.
👰 Ready or Not (2019)
Marriage is hard enough without your in-laws trying to sacrifice you. A wedding-night nightmare with excellent comedic timing.
☣️ Resident Evil (2002)
An evil corporation, biological experiments & a woman who really deserves better coworkers. I cannot wait to see the new one (2026).
🩸 Obsession (2025)
A supernatural love story where wanting someone a little TOO badly takes a horrifying turn. Because apparently manifesting your crush can have consequences. Romantic? Absolutely not. Unsettling? Very.
🪓 The Evil Dead (1981)
Five friends, a remote cabin & a mysterious book that should’ve stayed CLOSED. Low-budget practical effects, demonic chaos & a whole lot of screaming. Sometimes the classics really do know how to ruin a weekend.
🪚 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
A road trip through rural Texas goes spectacularly wrong. Gritty, grimy & proof that you should NEVER investigate strange noises coming from somebody else’s property.
🐈 Pet Sematary (1989)
Sometimes dead is better… & sometimes people need to listen to the extremely obvious warnings they’re given. Stephen King really said, “What if grief made everything worse?”
🌀 Saw (2004)
Two strangers wake up in a filthy bathroom with absolutely no idea how they got there. A movie that turned elaborate moral dilemmas into a horror franchise. Suddenly escape rooms seem less appealing.
💼 American Psycho (2000)
Business cards, skincare routines & a Wall Street man with an absolutely terrifying morning schedule. Corporate culture has never looked so unwell.
📼 The Ring (2002)
A cursed videotape, seven days to live & the reason an entire generation developed trust issues with televisions. Imagine surviving all that just to answer an unknown number.
✝️ The Exorcist (1973)
A possessed child, two priests & a bedroom that desperately needs an exorcism & a deep clean. Decades later, this one still knows how to get under your skin.
🦇 Campy, Queer & Cult Favorites
Outrageous costumes, iconic characters & glorious weirdness. You need themed cocktails + dinner, with absolutely no indoor voices.
🪲 Beetlejuice (1988)
A haunted house, questionable interior design & one extremely unemployed-looking ghost with boundary issues. Say his name three times. Actually, maybe don’t…
💋 The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Fishnets. Musical numbers. Absolutely no explanation necessary. If you haven’t experienced this with a live audience, add it to your bucket list.
💄 Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Megan Fox, toxic friendship & a horror movie that deserved better from its original marketing.
🔪 Scream (1996)
A horror movie that knows it’s a horror movie. Iconic opening scene, terrible phone etiquette & the reason some of us still side-eye unknown callers. What’s your favorite scary movie?
🔮 The Craft (1996)
Teenage witches, Catholic school uniforms & the consequences of giving high school girls unlimited supernatural power.
💅 Death Becomes Her (1992)
Eternal youth, murderous glamour & Meryl Streep & Goldie Hawn being absolute disasters. Cinema peaked.
🐺 Ginger Snaps (2000)
Sisterhood, puberty & lycanthropy. Being a teenage girl was already hard enough. Sigh.
🐦⬛ The Crow (1994)
Romance, revenge & a soundtrack that deserves its own Halloween playlist.
🏡 Suburban Nightmares & Other Questionable Decisions
HOA meetings, suspicious basements & people who desperately need to mind their business. Because sometimes the scariest thing is your neighbor.
🏘️ The ’Burbs (1989)
Tom Hanks becomes convinced his neighbors are up to something sinister… A film about suburban boredom, paranoia & why some people desperately need a hobby.
🧛 Fright Night (1985 / 2011)
Your neighbor might be a vampire. Both versions deserve a spot.
🍿 Gremlins (1984)
Three rules. THREE… & somehow everyone manages to ignore them.
👟 The Monster Squad (1987)
A group of kids takes on classic monsters. Childhood adventure with actual stakes.
🔭 Disturbia (2007)
A teenager under house arrest develops a new hobby: spying on a potentially murderous neighbor.
🏠 Monster House (2006)
A suburban home with serious anger issues. Technically animated, but it fits this theme beautifully.
👽 Creature Features, Body Horror & Sci-Fi Nightmares
Some spooky, Sci-Fi & supernatural Weirdness. For when ghosts aren’t enough & you need aliens, scientific disasters or creatures that have absolutely no business existing.
🪰 The Fly (1986)
Jeff Goldblum makes a scientific breakthrough. Unfortunately, his body has other plans.
👽 Alien (1979)
Space travel, corporate negligence & the worst possible surprise dinner guest.
☣️ Resident Evil (2002)
An evil corporation, biological experiments & a woman who deserves better coworkers.
🧟 28 Days Later (2002)
Society collapses, infected people sprint & suddenly staying indoors sounds delightful.
🌕 Werewolf by Night (2022)
A monster special with classic horror atmosphere. I’d recommend watching in black-&-white.
🎃 Trick ’r Treat (2007)
Interconnected Halloween stories, creepy traditions & a tiny burlap-masked menace.
🎞️ Old-School Horror & Cinema History
The vibe: Black-&-white nightmares, pioneering filmmakers & horror before CGI.
🦇 Nosferatu (1922)
Silent cinema, German Expressionism & Count Orlok being deeply unsettling without saying a word.
🧟 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George A. Romero helped redefine zombie horror with a film that still has plenty to say. Must do.
🚿 Psycho (1960)
Hitchcock, a motel & a shower scene that changed horror cinema.
⚡ Young Frankenstein (1974)
Gene Wilder, Mel Brooks & a loving parody of classic monster movies.
🧟 So Bad They’re Good
Ridiculous premises, questionable acting & movies we love anyway.
🤡 Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
The title tells you everything you need to know, & somehow the movie is even more ridiculous. Cinema.
🏕️ The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
A horror movie that takes familiar genre rules & gleefully dismantles them.
🖤 Black Horror: Culture, Commentary & Nightmares
🫖 Get Out (2017)
Jordan Peele takes the uncomfortable meet-the-parents experience & makes it an actual nightmare. It kept me on the edge of my seat.
✂️ Us (2019)
Doppelgängers, social commentary & a family vacation that goes spectacularly wrong.
🎸 Sinners (2025)
Ryan Coogler blends Southern Gothic atmosphere, music, history & supernatural horror. The costume design is one of my favorites. So many details in one film.
🐈⬛ Animated & Whimsically Weird
Stop-motion, dark fantasy & spooky animation.
🏠 Monster House (2006)
💍 Corpse Bride (2005)
Gothic romance, beautiful animation & a love triangle involving someone who’s already dead.
🧵 Coraline (2009)
A children’s movie that had absolutely no business being this unsettling. Buttons for eyes? Respectfully, NO.
🐕 Frankenweenie (2012)
Tim Burton, a boy & his beloved dog. Emotional damage with a side of stop-motion.
👻 ParaNorman (2012)
Ghosts, misunderstood kids & a surprisingly thoughtful story about fear.
🌼 Coco (2017)
A colorful journey through the Land of the Dead, family secrets & enough marigolds to make my heart explode. Pixar really said, “Come for the skeletons, stay for the generational emotional damage.” BRB, crying over Remember Me. 🥹
🎄The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
A Halloween classic, but I tend to save this for Christmas, & pair it with Edward Scissorhands. Respect.
📺 Bonus: When One Movie Isn’t Enough
Because sometimes two hours of supernatural chaos simply isn’t enough. 😂 From government conspiracies & cryptkeepers to small-town nightmares, these are the shows keeping my spooky little heart entertained.
I LOVE the idea of a little “Spooky TV Binge.” Sit down, because you never know what you’re going to get.
🛸 The X-Files (1993–2018)
The truth is out there. So are aliens, government conspiracies & approximately 200 reasons to never trust the authorities. Mulder & Scully forever. ILY!
⚰️ Tales from the Crypt (1989–1996)
Horror stories, twisted endings & a wisecracking skeleton who has absolutely no business being this entertaining. The Crypt Keeper was doing horror hosting before it was cool.
🎈 IT: Welcome to Derry (2025)
Because apparently Pennywise’s origin story wasn’t disturbing enough, we’re going BACK to Derry. A Stephen King prequel series exploring the town’s deeply cursed history & the horrors lurking beneath it.
🩸 Carrie (2026)
Mike Flanagan tackling Stephen King? Immediately seated. A fresh take on a familiar nightmare, with plenty of room for the psychological horror & interconnected King universe details I love.
🏕️ Crystal Lake (2026)
A Friday the 13th prequel series digging into the horrors surrounding Camp Crystal Lake. Because apparently generations of people still haven’t learned to avoid this place.
🎬 Okay, What Should I Watch Next?
Listen, I’ve watched enough horror movies to know that I’m probably one questionable decision away from becoming the opening scene. 😂
But somehow, my watchlist keeps growing.
So now I’m turning the tables on YOU.
What’s your must-watch Halloween movie? The underrated cult classic, the childhood favorite, the one that genuinely scared the hell out of you… or the movie you defend with your entire spooky little heart?
Tell me what I missed! 👀🍿
I’m always hunting for something wonderfully weird, beautifully Gothic or just plain unhinged to add to the rotation.
… & yes, I’ll be updating this list every spooky season because apparently this is a year-round personality trait.
Until next time, stay weird, stay curious & maybe don’t investigate that noise in the basement.
🖤 With love + chaos,
Messy Jesi
