Home Takes Time
This fall will mark five years in our Westside home.
Our little lazy daisy bungalow.
… & honestly? It still doesn’t feel “done.”
When we first moved in (2021), I thought we’d knock everything out in a year or two.
Paint the walls.
Redo a few spaces.
Add personality.
Call it a day.
But home doesn’t really work like that.
The Reality No One Talks About
With homeownership, there’s always a list.
A long one.
Projects you started.
Projects you pinned.
Projects you swore you’d finish “next weekend.”
Then life happens.
Time moves.
Budgets shift.
Energy comes & goes.
… & suddenly you look up and realize, you’re still in progress.
Why We’re Staying Put
We’re not planning to move anytime soon. Between housing prices, interest rates, & honestly just liking where we are, this house is it for now.
So instead of treating it like a temporary project… We’re starting to treat it like what it actually is, home.
Letting Go of the Backlog
For a while, the to-do list felt heavy. Overwhelming. Like every unfinished project was something hanging over us.
But lately? We’ve been shifting our mindset.
Less: “I need to finish everything.”
More: “I want to enjoy what we’ve already built.”
Because the truth is, some of my favorite parts of this house weren’t planned. They happened slowly.
The Best Parts Took Time
The vintage finds. The weird little corners.
The pieces that didn’t match at first… but somehow do now.
That layered feeling? You can’t rush that.
You can’t order a home with character. It’s built over time. Through trial, error, and a few questionable DIY decisions.
Where We’re At Now
We’re still painting.
Still tweaking.
Still figuring things out room by room.
But it feels different now.
Less pressure.
More intention.
Less “finish line.”
More “this is ours.”
✨ The Takeaway
Some of my favorite corners in this house didn’t exist in year one… they showed up somewhere around year three. Home takes time.
Not just to decorate… but to understand how you actually want to live in it.
So if your space isn’t perfect yet?
Good.
It probably means you’re still building something real.
Because the best homes aren’t finished, they’re lived in.
